Happy Birthday Internet! (belated)

Supercomputing Online pointed out that yesterday, June 30th was the birthday of the mordern Internet. In the early 1980s, NSF put together NSFNet as a network connecting regional computer networks around the country. The Department of Defense had already created the Arpanet network, which gave birth to many of the tools and techniques used on the modern Internet, but Arpanet traffic was limited to Defense-sponsored research. NSFNet was designed to be open to all users.

The design of NSFNet was awarded to a team made of MCI, IBM, and a computer-networking-technology consortium of Michigan universities called Merit Networks. Their main challenge: the network’s backbone ran at 56k/s, good old dial up modems. Take a moment and remember the sound. communication

Twenty years ago, on the evening of June 30th, a network engineer named Hans-Werner Braun sent that text in an an e-mail message to users of the National Science Foundation’s fledgling NSFNet project. The network’s main lines, or backbone, had been upgraded, he said.

This is the proposal for an installation I am making for the Downtown Los Angeles Film Festival . This is exploring some of the points in Level 1 of the steps to Inhaborg. This is also for a class I am taking with MarkDavid Hosale. So by the end of it (or at least August 8th) I will know how to get my little arduino board up and running.

Digital Pleistocene! The past 2 days have been filled with a plethora of intoxicating info streams all starting from the word "ecology." (notice the wikipedia hyper link) The second thing is "social" and the third is "predator-prey" relations. I am no going to give you the entire synopsis of events but let's say my other new adventure is researching and compiling a small archive of info on bonobo ape. They are the only other mammal that mates face to face other than humans. So expect more bonobo posts quite soon.

Also, I finally got my poetry book together. This has been way to long in the making. Feel free to check it out. The following is the description of the book and what is pretty much how I feel about a lot of "things."

Ultimately that is what resides on the page. From pixels to ink to nerve endings, the following work is work. It is process. Snap shots of what was. The poems themselves are collages of images and words. What is the meaning? Well, what does it mean to you? When you read blue do you feel red or smell broccoli? With juxtapositions of images, you might find the new meaning of a word or go somewhere you never had before. The trick is making the vernacular spectacular. All these poems are subject to time and evolution. The revisions may find themselves inverted in two or three months. But I cannot see the future. Can you? Or can you see yourself in these? Or is it me?

2008 NINA contest

In case you're wondering, materials for the 2008 NINA contest will be mailed to member newspapers in the next week or so, and also will be posted here. The period for eligible entries is May 1, 2007, to April 30, 2008. Categories will be basically the same as last year. Entry submission deadline will either be June 23 or 30. Full details soon.

So once again this blog will change its main forging forces. As you can see below, the movie is done. I am working on packaging it for those who want a copy. I will come with a small zine holding the contents of the this very here blog! Whoo hoo.

A new semester. A new year of my life (on both counts for those who know what I'm counting about.) What to record now? My studio project is taking a thesis turn. And I feel like this blog will still show some of the happenings and mishaps that I make happen. But, the project(s) tittle will be InhabOrg, just to be coy. It's the inhabitable organism blog I have been working one with Shields and Jenna.

But this is good space to document my other endeavors, aka explorations with max/msp/jitter. Also, I've befriended an amazing brilliant artist/filmaker/actor/everything while on my adventure to NYC. Please check his work out. Fritz Donnelly. He will have his piece Videopedia playing at the New Museum, nyc. I had the opportunity to do the camera work for a recent short. "Dress me up and tell me what to do" Of course, I had him in a large cardboard box. This video is "Pull" from Videopedia. I will post the other one when I can get it from him.. or the link. etc.
